Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
During these unprecedented times maybe its a big ask to ask people to support a Charity, but here goes my plug:
Most people believe that the life of a crew member working at sea is a life full of fun, excitement, and adventure, and at many times it is. But there is also the darker side, that is lesser known, where seafarers miss families, miss weddings, funerals, birthdays, risk their lives in sometimes dangerous seas, work every day for sometimes almost a year, going through all of this often causes excess stress. Did you know 15% of deaths at sea are from suicide, often brought on by the stress of the lifestyle, that's 10 x the worldwide statistic?
So, if its so bad, why do people go? Many seafarers go for the love of the job, its an industry truly like no other, others go for an adventure and "to see the world" (although often that doesn't happen so much), but a much greater proportion of people go simply to support their families and loved ones at home, with many nationalities choosing to work on a ship to earn a years salary in just one month.
With the shocking worldwide Covid19 pandemic in play, still on this day thousands of crew are stranded worldwide, onboard, in a foreign country, in hospital, or, in their home country but unable to make the last leg of their journey to be reunited with families. Frankly, its a mess. Unlike many other land based professions, there is no governmental support like the UK Furlough Scheme and other similar initiatives worldwide. Now many of these hard working people who have given up their normal life to generate income for their families are with zero income and stuck on the other side of the world from their families.
I want to help that through a donation to Sailors Society, who support seafarers and their families worldwide. Day to day they provide development and training, mental and emotional support, financial aid and so many other great projects including building schools for communities. That support is extended through this pandemic. Give £1 or £100, it doesn't matter, please help the hardworking seafarers around the world who provide 25 million people a year a holiday and bring 90% of the worlds products and foods to the people that need them.
