Story
Being blind or partially sighted can be really tough. Getting the right support from RNIB can make our lives so much better.
I work for RNIB, which is a UK charity, and I am blind myself. We are led by a trustee board mainly comprising blind and partially sighted people. Our ambition is to make every day better for everyone affected by sight loss.
We campaign to make the world fairer for visually impaired people; we enable people with sight loss to connect with each other; we give emotional and practical support to people losing their sight; we provide advice, services and products to support independence; we produce books of all kinds in audio, large print and braille.
I began to lose my sight as a child and experienced further deterioration through my teenage years. By the time I was at university I couldn't see to read and was having difficulty getting around. There are so many things I have to thank RNIB for, including the fabulous Talking Book Service, which gives me access to the joy of reading, and products which support my independence inside and outside the home. I have benefitted hugely from RNIB's championing of the rights of blind and partially sighted people, including support in the work place to enable me to do my job ; additional income to meet the extra costs of being blind; and a right to receive information in formats I can read, such as audio and braille.
Going on the Iceland Trek is one way I can give something back to RNIB and to other blind and partially sighted people.
