Story
We are taking part in ‘Rafiki Relay for Education – Cairo to
Cape Town’ and would love your support to help us achieve our goal! We aim to walk, run, cycle or swim 30km every week for 6 weeks, and therefore contribute a total of 180 km to the whopping 13,222km collective challenge! The challenge starts ‘in Cairo’ on the 26th April!
We are doing this because I really believe in this charity’s
cause and want to help them raise money to continue their wonderful work.
Rafiki Thabo’s vision is that young people, including
those living with disabilities, will be empowered through education to enable
them to reach their full potential and initiate positive change in their
communities. They help children who could otherwise not afford to get an
education, by paying their school fees. In Kenya, Uganda and Lesotho where
Rafiki Thabo have their programmes, even attending normal secondary school
means insurmountable school fees, and being away at school would mean that the
children cannot work to help put food on the table. The result is that the
children are often made to stay at home. Girls are married off too young, and
the poverty cycle continues. 8 out of 10 children in Uganda will never go to
secondary school! This is because 63% of their population live on less than
£1.50 per day (£550 per year), yet the cost of the average secondary school is
£322 per year and for a year at university £840 per year.
Rafiki Thabo also raise money for nutritious school meals
for the very poorest at their link schools, who would otherwise go hungry, and support
education infrastructure. Such as building dormitories to keep the children
safe at school instead of embarking on the long and hazardous walk to their
remote villages every day.
I would love it if you would consider sponsoring our
challenge and help us raise money to enable Rafiki Thabo to empower more
children through education!
