Story
TLDR: I'm fundraising for Justice Outside because everyone should feel included, empowered and safe outdoors, and you should join me!
Why I am doing this:
Outside is a wonderful place to be. That's what I think to myself each time I am exploring the outdoors. Whether it's gardening in the backyard, picnicking in a park, or getting out to the trails, everyone should have the opportunity to know the joy of nature and the outdoors. Yet we know that for people of color, access to the outdoor field hasn't been equitable, fair, or culturally relevant.
As a Latina who loves nature and works in the environmental field I recognize that I am in a position to support programs and projects that support Black, Indigenous, and Communities of Color like my own to experience health, and abundant joy through meaningful relationships with one another and the outdoors. This year, I joined the board of Justice Outside and I am so excited to be fundraising for Explore-A-Thon on their behalf. JO is a pretty amazing organization with programs spanning fellowships for BIPOC and underrepresented groups to enter the environmental field (with concrete pathways to employment!!), grantmaking that pushes boundaries on traditional philanthropic models - fundamentally shifting resources to grassroots organizations, and seminars and coaching sessions to organizations on social justice and cultural relevancy. I have really enjoyed getting to know this organization and support it.
One of the things that most inspires me about JO is how it makes me reflect on my own community. I hope it also inspires you to consider ways to integrate into your local outdoor community, and if you're near me - or not - join me for a walk/run/hike in person or on the phone. Over the next month I am committed to moving my body for 100 miles - I'm talking morning walks, lunch time walks, evening walks -- let's get moving!
