Before moving to the US, Mike and I regularly did the Middlesbrough Parkrun, a free timed 5k run in Albert Park every Saturday morning. Through this wonderful community event we have had the great pleasure of meeting Mike Wren. Tragically, Mike’s baby daughter, Charlotte, died in 2007 from a rare childhood leukaemia - Juvenile Myelomonocytic Leukaemia. Since Charlotte’s death, Mike and his wife Claire have been tirelessly fundraising in her memory and to date they have raised over £67,000 to help fund research into this disease.
Charlotte's Fund (Registered Charity No 219371) is a fund dedicated to her memory by supporting vital research into blood cancers as part of the national and internationally recognised Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research (LLR - Registered Charity No 216032) charity. Claire and Mike’s vision is for all funds raised through Charlotte’s Fund, to be channelled into groundbreaking research into less invasive, less painful and more effective treatments for blood cancers affecting children.
In a moment of weakness just before Christmas 2010, we promised Mike that if we moved to Houston we would do the marathon in honour of Charlotte’s fund - well, here we are! We’ve been training since August, getting up at 5am on a Saturday morning to do long runs, avoiding the American sized food portions and sometimes pounding the streets in heat over 41°C. The big race (all 26.2 miles) will finally be here on 15 January and we welcome any and all sponsorship we can get!
Thanks for taking the time to look at our just giving page and anything you can give to this extremely worthy fund is much appreciated! With your support, Charlotte’s memory can continue to positively impact on people’s lives for years to come.
