Great White Shark Cage Diving · 23 November 2014

Alzheimer Scotland is the leading, national dementia charity in Scotland. Our mission is to make sure nobody faces dementia alone. We provide advice, information and support and we are here for people living with dementia, their families and carers across Scotland.

Story

In november, I participated in a cage dive with great white sharks in South Africa to raise money for Alzheimer Scotland. Specifically, the West Dunbartonshire service.

Alzheimer Scotland is a charity that provides care, information and support to people suffering from dementia and their carers, so any money raised from my dive will go directly to this charity.

Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of illnesses and disease symptoms that affect the brain, and in almost every case, it is progessive and degenerative. There are around 800,000 people in the UK suffering from dementia (although, that number is increasing) and at the moment and there is no cure. The condition usually occurs in people over the age of 65 but can also affect younger people. As the disease progresses, the care needs of people with the condition increase.

In West Dunbartonshire, we have a daycare service which runs 5 days a week, home support, carer support groups, carer education courses, a dementia cafe and musical memories nights and the money raised from my dive will go towards these services to help provide support and information for people suffering with dementia, and their carers. All donations will be going to this service.

I have added photos of the dive, and a video if you are interested!
