Story

What would you do if your boss owed you a month's wages? If it was a month down the line, you'd used your savings to cover the rent and bills and things were getting really tight?

Maybe you'd leave that job, find somewhere new..?

But what if you already had that new job and needed to work for four weeks before your first pay cheque? What would two months without any income at all mean for you?

It's sometimes hard to get your head around the idea that someone living on your street might be skipping meals to feed their kids.

The trouble is, someone really could be.

In the last year, 1,109,309 three day emergency food supplies were provided by Trussell Trust foodbanks to people like us who have been hit by crisis. Over a third of those went to children.

That's 1.1 million times someone in the UK didn't go hungry because a foodbank was there when no one else was.

Anyone can find themselves in need of emergency food. I've spoken to a doctor, a teaching assistant, a shop manager, a working mum, and so many other ordinary people about the time they were referred to a foodbank.

And the thing people always talk about is the difference the foodbank made: being listened to by friendly people; knowing there's something for the kids' tea tonight; feeling hope that things are going to start changing.

Hunger is real, and it's not always where you would expect.

I'm lucky - I've never needed to worry about where I'll find the money for dinner tomorrow. But that's not the case for everyone. I'm raising money for The Trussell Trust because no one should ever find themselves unable to afford food. But people do. And when that happens, foodbanks across the country make sure that when people hit rock bottom, there's somewhere to turn.
