Story
We have been concerned about the 'loss of learning' experienced by children from disadvantaged backgrounds due to a lack of access to digital technology. We are all invested in widening participation in medicine, which is under-represented by those from lower socio-economic groups, who were hit hardest by the pandemic. Conversely, those who normally access Medical Programmes (from private schools and higher socio-economic groups) will have not been as impacted, due to access to technology and the ability to afford private tuition. By supplying free laptops to those from disadvantaged backgrounds we are improving the chances of our target group to ensure that the medical profession is diverse and reflective of the people they are treating.
We hope that along with our extensive outreach locally and nationally we can build aspirations and aid learning and attainment in those who do decide they would like to become doctors in the future, but whose learning has suffered and who do not have the social, cultural or financial capital to enable them to succeed. Just giving them a chance!
Millfield's Trust is a charity that works with the poorest and most deprived children in Plymouth and will help distribute the laptops to children in need of digital access for their education.
