I am participating in the Great South Run in Portsmouth on October 30th to help raise funds for the Alzheimers Society. As most of you know my mother was diagnosed with the alzheimers 7years ago & her battle has highlighted to me the need for more awareness and funding for this crippling disease.

Some facts that might interest you....

- Every 70 seconds someone develops Alzheimers.

- 1 in 8 of us reading this will develop Alzheimers in the future

- Alzheimers is the 7th leading cause of death & there is no cure

- Early onset Alzheimers can be diagnosed in people as young as 30yrs.

- After age 65yrs the odds of a person having alzheimers double approximately every 5yrs.

- 5.4m americans are living with Alz. By 2050 as many as 16m will have the disease. There are currently 750,000 people in the UK with dementia

- Alzheimers receives far less research/donation dollars than other diseases. In the US Federal funding = $480M for Alzheimers, $6B for Cancer, $4B for Heart Disease & $3.1B for HIV

- more than 7 in 10 people with alzheimers disease live at home, where family & friends provide 75% of their care.

- In the US there are 15m alzheimers & dementia caregivers providing 17b hours of unpaid care valued at $202B

- 1 in 3 alzheimers caregivers provide all of the unpaid care for their loved ones. 2 in 3 caregives experience strains on their marriage, families & jobs.
