Story
My name is Derek Banks. I have lived with Type 1 diabetes for 55 years, and I am a keen supporter of Diabetes UK’s work to care for, connect with and campaign alongside people living with, and at risk of, diabetes.
I have already raised thousands to help people with diabetes since 1983, and have now decided to take on one final fundraising challenge in 2015 to raise £25,000 for Diabetes UK.
I will be attempting a Multi Marathon at my local Bannatyne’s Gym in Dumfries on May 22nd 2015. This will involve 26 miles on a rowing machine, followed by 26 miles on an exercise bike, and then finally, a 26 mile run on the running machine – all in one day. I’ll be following this up with a climb up Ben Nevis on June 6th, the highest mountain in the British Isles.
The money raised from the Multi Marathon and the Ben Nevis climb will benefit Diabetes UK’s care events for children, young people and families who are affected by diabetes. These fun, informative and empowering events provide support and opportunities to meet and learn from other people with diabetes, share experiences in a relaxed, informal environment and to gain skills, confidence and knowledge to live with and self-manage diabetes. There is also the opportunity to spend valuable time with a healthcare team to discuss all aspects of diabetes, and to try new and exciting activities and make lasting friendships.
I’m looking for as many people as possible to join me on the Ben Nevis climb, and I hope that this will be one of Diabetes UK’s biggest and best fundraising events. I’m also seeking sponsorship and publicity backing, and if your business or company would be able to help, I’d be so grateful.
For further information, or to join in with the challenge, contact Susie Williamson, Diabetes UK Regional Fundraiser, at susan.williamson@diabetes.org.uk or by telephone on 07515 974125. You can also contact me directly on 07926275484.
Many thanks in advance for your invaluable support.
