Story
Today, one in three people worldwide have no access to waste management services and are forced to dump or burn their waste, causing disease, polluting the oceans, and contributing to the global climate crisis. Nine million people a year die from diseases linked to waste and pollution and up to 5-10% of all climate change emissions are caused by the open burning of waste.
I believe that this is an issue that deserves our attention, which is why I'm joining forces with my work colleagues at Zumo to fundraise in support of the good work of UK charity, WasteAid.
Please help me to raise visibility for this critical issue, support sustainable waste management practices worldwide and reach our fundraising target by donating and sharing at the foot of this page.
What exactly am I doing?
In the next few weeks, I've personally committed to walking at least 100 miles (234,280 steps) as part of a team attempt to cover the 5,965 miles between Edinburgh and South Africa, with pit stops on the way at WasteAid's project locations.
Then, on the last day of the challenge on the 9th of December, I'll be doing a further awareness and fundraising walk with my colleagues.
What is WasteAid and what does it do?
WasteAid is a young, dynamic, and independent charity, based in the UK but with global reach. The charity works with local communities and policy makers in some of the world's poorest places to implement solutions focused on waste management and recycling.
Their work improves the livelihoods of some of the most marginalised people, promotes circular economy innovation and contributes to better health, a cleaner environment, and dignified jobs.
Where will your money go?
By donating, you will help WasteAid in its work to improve livelihoods, promote circular economy innovation and contribute to a cleaner and healthier future for all. WasteAid currently has active programmes in Gambia, Cameroon, South Africa, Malawi, Kenya, India, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
Please give as generously as you are able.
Thank you,
Daria
