No Hands, No Limits

Let’s get Adam on the Road

I am raising money to purchase, adapt and maintain a car for a remarkable young man, Adam Dalton.

Adam has complex physical disabilities. He was born with only upper arms, no elbows, or hands and deformities of both legs. Not that that stops him! At the age of 17, Adam continues to strive for independence and is already achieving success as a golfer.

Taking up golf has been a life saver for Adam. It has provided him with a real sense of purpose, and he is pretty darn good at it too. Regularly hitting his driver over 200 yards and winning competitions, he has won the admiration of many a seasoned player.

It is essential as Adam grows up that all opportunities for independence are explored. He will need adapted accommodation to include a workplace so that he does not need a carer, in addition to the everyday things an able-bodied person can access.

This is why I am asking you for your support to buy Adam a car, so he can achieve independent travel and experience the freedom of the open road. Adam desperately wants some independence and we can help him. In Jersey there is no support from the Government for drivers with disabilities as there is in the UK.

Think about this – how do you turn up the heating, or unlock the car when you don’t have a hand? How do you open a boot when you can’t reach it? How can you use the pedals with a shortened leg? Having tested a range of vehicles and obtained advice from numerous disability organisations, the Mercedes GLA200 1.3cc AMG Line Premium Pack is the only car that meets Adam’s needs. With the existing features of this car and some adaption, Adam can overcome all those obstacles.

Despite this model having limited production at the moment, Jacksons Garage have managed to secure the car and are also very kindly providing three years’ servicing free of charge. Drive Ability Jersey and Enable Jersey are also very generously committed to supporting Adam with this dream, but we need your help to raise enough money to buy, adapt, insure and run the car.

I have known Adam since birth and his mum Juliette since we were teenagers. Juliette is his primary carer and she has a constant battle to keep things moving towards Adam achieving a normal pattern of life. Unfortunately, a battle which is shared by many adults with a disability. Their seemingly unending strength and dignity they show with the constant challenges they face is both humbling and inspiring. So please do dig deep.

If you don’t know Adam or would like to know more about his remarkable achievements and see his cheeky grin for yourself, look him up online. He’s on Instagram, YouTube and Facebook under Adam Dalton or Adam ‘nubs’ Dalton.
