Story
Local Charity faces uncertain future after funding cuts.
Wyke Community and Children’s Centre, a Registered Charity since 2008, has been at the heart of the Community since mid 1990's, providing a range of services to local people in and around Wyke.
The future of Centre and its users – children and adults, many who are vulnerable – is in doubt after funding cuts.
The centre recently had to suspend its daily Elderly Day Care provision due to recent further funding cuts. The provision, described as a ‘lifeline’ for many residents, was no longer financially viable.
Also, at risk, are the centre’s nursery provision and out of school hours and holiday club for primary age children.
The centre, which has a good Ofsted rating, is proud of meeting the needs of a disproportionate number of children with Special Education Needs and Disabilities.
Centre Trustees and managers had hoped a third party would take over the running of the centre. However, few have come forward.
Wyke Children’s Centre are now appealing for local residents, businesses and other providers for support to ensure its valuable service continues to serve the community for years to come.
Residents can help by raising funds via sponsored events such as the Bradford City Run due in the coming weeks.
The centre is holding Wyke’s Annual Bonfire and Firework Show on Friday 1st November 6.30 – 8.30pm. The Firework display will at 7.30pm and refreshments will be available on the night. A nominal entrance fee will go towards the centre’s cause.
Local businesses are able to come forward to sponsor the event, including the firework display or support generally with donations or contra services to help centre sustainability. Businesses are reminded that they can make savings on their corporation tax by making charitable donations.
The long-term survival of the centre would require a merger or takeover by an organisation that has a similar community ethos.
