Story
The Working Class Creatives Database is a platform to share and highlight the work of working-class creatives by promoting a more accessible arts culture in the UK. The Working Class Creatives Database aims to facilitate a space that puts working-class creatives at the forefront; A space for conversation, connections, and sharing of opportunities, skills, and knowledge. This database is about creating a community amongst working-class artists and encouraging greater representation of the working-class experience within the arts.
Art is an important part of our society and provides an alternative way of communicating and expressing personal experience. It enhances connections and networks, provides a stronger sense of place, identity and heritage. We believe everyone should have access to the arts and have equal opportunities, not just those who can afford to.
Our aims are to:
- Create a Community
- Tackle Classism
- Provide a Platform
We host a variety of meetings, Events and workshops for our members as well as providing studio space and exhibition opportunities. We share our members via our website and our Instagram. We also connect them with industry professionals and supporters.
We would like to host more exhibitions throughout the region showcasing the work and voices of working class creates and create a publication spreading our message far and wide!
You can read our full manifesto here: https://www.workingclasscreativesdatabase.co.uk/manifesto
We have a group of core members who volunteer their time to keep the database running smoothly but for over a year we have been in a state in Limbo. We started as an Instagram community and have natural formed into somewhat of a cultural institution. We now have over 500 members and the work load has got too much for us.
We have been running with just pure volunteering and passion for making a change. We have now got to the stage where our core team of volunteers are struggling to balance working multiple day jobs in addition to running the database and it's becoming more difficult to run as more members join. We're unable to spend the time we would like providing support to our members, facilitating and collaborating. We've been in an endless cycle of falling behind on work and trying to catch up and this is becoming harder and harder. We want to do so much more and make a big difference within society but we have found ourselves at a standstill. This funding is vital to us continuing our work and fulfilling all of our goals.
Our aim would be to fund 2 Part time roles for a year so we can have the space and time to focus on getting the WCCD on its feet. The rest would go to freelance roles and running costs. Please email us if you would like a full breakdown of our costs.
If you have benefited from the database or can spare a few quid we would appreciate your support!
Thank you!
