Story
Wise Women was established in 1994 to provide personal safety, with a difference, for women in Glasgow. It was recognised that at that time women struggled to speak about the violence and abuse they were experiencing in the home, but would discuss their fears about violence in the community. Wise Women has built a feminist programme that provides a safe space for women to speak about violence against women, recognise that however they responded to historical abuse was the right response for them and to emphasise that only the abuser is to blame for male violence against women.
We continue to support women in Glasgow, but the online support required through Covid and national interest from Radio 4 has highlighted a wider need for this approach. We are currently working in partnership with a London based service to identify women's needs around points of transition, e.g. leaving prison to return to their community.
Any money raised will be used to expand the service to allow us to reach communities that currently do not have access to this feminist approach.
