Story
Tree planting is always a utopian enterprise... a wager on a future the planter doesn’t necessarily expect to witness – Michael Pollan
Help us in our utopian mission to fight climate change and make the UK a nicer, greener place for all! We are fundraising to support tree planting across the UK, helping to establish wildlife corridors and increase biodiversity nationally.
By planting trees we aim to not only help fight climate change by capturing carbon in the longer term, but also to provide a habitat for wildlife.
Trees are vital for a happy society and healthy planet
Climate change is a global problem, and it is easy to feel powerless and frustrated at our faltering leadership on this issue. We need to take action at the local level! Tree planting is one of the best actions we can take in our own communities, working with nature to capture carbon and mitigate climate change.
The UK has an average of 13 per cent tree cover, compared to the European average of 35 per cent. The UK has also lost all of its big fauna. The ancient character of the land, covered with forests, has largely been forgotten. Today, many see the open treeless hills which characterise much of the British landscape as natural.
Why tree planting?
Trees are natural magical machines!
In addition to essential habitat generation, providing shelter and food for countless wildlife species (oak trees alone support 284 species of insects), helping to support increasing biodiversity up the food chain. As if that was not enough, trees also: re-nutrify and stabilise the soil, reducing flooding risk and topsoil runoff, moderate air temperature, clean the air of toxins and become a sink for carbon in the longer term.
As each tree grows it will absorb up to 48 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere per year. One tree can sequester one tonne (1000kg) of carbon dioxide by the time it reaches 40 years old. To put this in perspective, the average person in the UK emits 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

Trees build themselves from carbon through photosynthesis, which is stored inside of the tree itself and below the ground over time, giving us a net reduction of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Planting trees is therefore a vital strategy to mitigate climate change and to help us live in symbiosis with nature, while providing much needed habitat for threatened UK species.
How you can help
Donations will be used to support our tree planting projects across the winter, working in partnership with communities and local landowners.
Donation as a gift
A donation can be made in your name or someone else’s - offsetting a loved one’s carbon footprint and leaving a positive legacy in nature would make an excellent and unique gift.
If you are a local business owner offsetting your carbon footprint is a great way to keep your local community a green, biodiverse place to live.

The Wilding Network C.I.C. is a Brighton-based not-for-profit which works to establish wildlife corridors across the UK. We are working to help create a wilder UK for the future, thriving with biodiversity for the enjoyment of all.
