Calling all Parents, Carers, Kings Heath Residents, Community Housing Organisations, Contractors and Businesses - Please Help us to Raise Funds to Astro Turf a Very Old Asphalt Arena in time for the Commonwealth Games!
If WLTC achieve their goal they will open the arena for the local community to use!
Wheelers Lane Technology College is a Secondary School based in Kings Heath, Birmingham, B13. They currently have just over 650 students attending from the surrounding areas. Community is at the heart of their ethos, and they work hard to make sure that everyone within the community is valued.
The pandemic has taken its toll on everyone within society, and we feel that the children have lost out on so much due to this dreaded virus. Three national lockdowns have meant that students have been learning remotely online, and this will inevitably have taken a toll upon their mental and physical health.
Wheelers have been trying to think of ways they can increase their student's exposure to the ‘outside world’ and are focusing on outdoor activities and sports. As a school they want to offer increased opportunities for all the boys in and outside of the curriculum. Wheeler’s want to provide a real chance for the boys to increase their physical activity, and support both the physical and mental wellbeing of current and future students.
Having a new, modern and ultimately safer surface will allow students to achieve and provide those opportunities and experiences which the current arena hinders. The aim at Wheelers is to provide as many opportunities and positive experiences to all of the students and a new surface outdoors will be a game changer. Sadly, Wheeler's current asphalt arena is very old and in poor condition.
When it’s been raining, the students are unable to use the arena due to the slippery surface, and this has a massive impact upon PE, and the physical activity the school can offer to students on a regular basis.
By resurfacing with astro turf Wheelers will be enabling their students to enjoy PE lessons, and offer more options in the school day and wider curriculum. They desperately need to re-surface it with astro turf to benefit their current students.
The target is to have it complete by the time of the Commonwealth Games, to help maximise the inspiration. The students are so fortunate to have such a world class event being held so close to home.
Please, Wheelers need to raise £10,000 to contribute towards making this project happen, and any small amount you can contribute will bring them one step closer. The school needs £25,000 to make this dream a reality. Wheelers are currently organising other fundraising activities.
Student Voices: Year 9 Student
If we had astro turf on the arena there would be many more opportunities to play more sport at school. Astro turf is better than concrete because we would be able to play certain sports properly such as rugby, football, Gaelic football, and more new sports can increase physical activity for us all after Covid, where we have missed so much school and PE. We would also be able to host our own games against other schools for many sports, rather than having to travel to other schools all the time, and offer competitions for primary schools and the community. An Astro turf would give us a big boost to be more active, stay even longer after school, and play a larger variety of sport and more opportunities to stay fit and improve our skills and stay physically and mentally strong.
Student Voices: Year 8 Student
A new arena surface is needed because there are many opportunities my peers and I feel we are missing out on. As a start there is a variety of potential new and exciting sports like rugby, athletics and hockey that would be brilliant to have in PE and do properly outdoors. We get really frustrated when it has rained, we can’t go outdoors as it’s not suitable to use, and we all go indoors where there isn’t much space. We miss out on some of our favourite sports and activities. Having a new surface would give all the students here at school a real boost, as we would have lots more opportunities especially outdoors, and lots more clubs and teams for all. We could start many new clubs and get more young people enjoying PE and sport and get the whole school to be more active. PE is our favourite subject, and we love PE lessons and having a new astro turf would be big boost and to get more students moving and involved. Also, being able to play fixtures at home would be amazing, we really need this as a school, please help!
If you are a community-based organisation or contractor, it may be that you can offer us help with Specialist Advice, Materials or Labour?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and as parents we really feel we need to do something to help this wonderful community school.
