Weʼve raised £1,250 to Help fund our work with Heshima School, an organisation working with the Maasai community in Tanzana providing training and education.

    Story

Heshima is an organisation that works with children and adults from the Maasai community; educating the youngsters and providing training and support for adults. As you can see from the pictures, the buildings and resources are very basic. There are two very small classrooms where children sit 3 to a desk designed for 2, a small textiles room with old fashioned sewing machines where the Maasai women develop skills which will allow them to make goods to sell, giving them an independent income.

In addition the site is expanding its adult education area and plans to develop a drop in community centre, where there will be access to computers and other training. However, funding is needed to complete the building work and furnish the room.

We have been working with Heshima for a week now, and this has given us time to figure out just what we can do to help. Some of the things that will be most useful are the most basic; enough drinking cups for each child to have their own, storage boxes, pencils, books, chalk, etc. In addition we would like to support the two fabulously dedicated teachers, Mwumvita and Constantine by stocking their classrooms with library areas, storage and teaching aids.

Zack, who lives on site with his family, oversees the everyday running of the school, provides site security and drives the donated school bus with constant good humour and commitment to the children he works with.

The children clearly love their school and we feel, that with your help, it would take relatively little from us to support the running of such a vital project.

A couple of years ago we made the decision to go traveling as a family, for an extended period of time. The more we discussed it the more we realised that this would allow us the opportunity to do some voluntary work. And now, here we are at Heshima in Northern Tanzania!
