Story
The Wandsworth Demons are hosting our fifth Big Freeze fundraiser in support of FightMND.
If your donation is specific to an activity or event (i.e. Raffle, Ice Challenge) please include this description in your donation message.
Each year, FightMND raises awareness and funds in conjunction with the AFL through the 'Big Freeze' at the MCG, started in 2015 by Neale Daniher (former coach of the Melbourne Demons FC) aiming to 'freeze the disease.'
While this year is a bit different, MND cannot be postponed or cancelled. On average, another two Australians and six in the UK will have been diagnosed today, another two tomorrow, and the next day and so on. MND has not stopped, so neither can we.
The horrible and debilitating disease gradually takes away the patient’s use of their arms and legs, their ability to eat and swallow, their speech and ultimately their ability to breathe…all in an average timeframe of just 27 months. There is currently no truly effective treatment and no known cure, so this is why we fight.
Together with FightMND, we are raising funds towards crucial research with the hope of finding effective treatments and ultimately a cure for Motor Neurone Disease.
In 2020 we are throwing our support behind FightMND with a month long physical activity campaign based around the virtual Common Challenge.
Members are encouraged to run, walk, ride around Clapham Common and record their distance and 'laps of the C' from anywhere in the world. Challenge your mates to see who can exercise the furthest or the fastest, or set up your own personal goal with associated fundraising such as £ / lap run.
You can also purchase Big Freeze merchandise to complete your look and get creative on your laps!

This year there is another important message in our campaign - to promote positive mental health through physical activity during lockdown.
We haven't been able to see each other as we normally would have, we are missing our members who have gone back to Australia, and we are all struggling without our social connections at the Club. Getting out there and keeping active is one way we can boost our mental health, and support this important cause! - Xavier Holland, Club President
We will also be holding a raffle with some fantastic prizes up for grabs; including a Travel Talk voucher for your next holiday, a signed AFL club guernsey from Australia, vouchers to dine in London and lots of other great prizes from our supporters!
The Big Freeze Raffle will be drawn on Monday 13th July and winners will be announced on our Facebook page.
