Story
York City legend Keith Walwyn made a total of 291 appearances for the club between 1981 and 1987. His 140 goals places him second in City’s all-time scoring list, and the big striker is acknowledged as one of York City’s greatest ever players, a fan favourite and a true legend.
In 1983-84, Keith was a major part of the side which became the first team in English football to get 100 points in a season. On the way to this landmark achievement, Keith scored 25 goals and was one of the most feared and respected strikers of his day.
The jersey he wore in this famous season was put up for auction in 1985 to raise funds for the Killingbeck Hospital, where a heart operation had saved the life of Keith's son, James.
Sadly, Keith passed away in April 2003. Since then, his memory has been cherished in many different ways and he has become an iconic figure for every York City fan.
The Walwyn family put out an appeal in June 2003 for the opportunity to get the shirt back from it’s owner. At the time, the whereabouts of the famous shirt was unknown.
Now, fifteen years later, the shirt has been found and the owner has kindly agreed for the York City supporters to purchase the shirt and return it to the Walwyn family, despite receiving some eye-watering offers from collectors who are also desperate to get their hands on an amazing piece of history, and who have offered far in excess of the final settled fee.
Gladly, a deposit for the full amount has been paid and the shirt is now in the possession of the football club. The plan is for the shirt to be presented to the Walwyns at the home game against Salford City on Sat 10th Feb, a gift from the York City supporters in memory of one of our greatest heroes.
Several supporters have mentioned that they would like to contribute to the cost of Keith’s shirt and so this page is where you can donate if you wish.
Any extra funds raised will be donated to the Academy, helping nuture the players of the future.
