Story

Meet Max...

Max Swift is a brilliant 3 year old boy from Halifax in West Yorkshire.

Max was just a baby when he was diagnosed with an ependymoma brain tumour and hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain) in September 2016. The tumour was on the right side and at the back of his brain stem, his central nervous system and down his spine, causing nerve damage and leaving him with a few difficulties. He has no balance and is unable to safely sit or stand unsupported. His right vocal cord is paralysed so he can't swallow, and struggles to formulate words to speak.

Max prefers to be independent though - He likes to go where he wants with the least amount of fuss and interference from others, though he can't walk unsupported and when he tires he needs to use a wheelchair.

Out & about...

Right now, Max can't easily get out into his garden to play, and we'd like to do something about that in time for summer!

There is a small yard with a ramp up to the road (built by Max's Dad). Max can use his wheels on the road but the road slants down so he needs careful guidance to make sure he isn't hitting the kerb all the time.

Race at our Pace for Max!

Max goes to Eureka! Nursery in Halifax , where 17 of the team will be taking part in Race at your Pace throughout the month of April. Race at your Pace challenges people to walk or run a set distance, and our team have committed to doing either 25 or 50 miles each.

On Easter Saturday, a group of them will all be walking 10 miles together. not only in a bid to get healthier, but they're also hoping to raise funds to pay for Max's garden to get a makeover into a fully accessible, lovely outdoor space for him to play in!

A pound or a penny - whatever you can spare will really spur us all on and get Max out and about this summer.
