Story

Mauritius is facing an environmental disaster after the grounded MV Wakashio began leaking bunker fuel on the 6th of August 2020, and finally split on the 15th of August.

During its voyage from China to Brazil, the MV Wakashio ran aground off Pointe d’Esny in the South-East of the island, on the 25th of July.

Heavy fuel is now leaking in to the lagoon from the starboard side. After recent conservation efforts, this area has become a breeding ground for turtles. Marine life, wildlife, the reefs and the beaches all stand to be decimated by this tragedy, and the clean up effort will be immense and lengthy.

Mauritius needs your help to raise funds to support locally organised clean up operations and the relief effort. Every little helps and your donations are gratefully received.
