Story
This fundraiser is organised and on behalf of a locally based non-profit NGO in Ghana called West African Health and Education Foundation (WAHEF). The goal of this organisation is very simple: they want to help improve the quality of healthcare and education in Ghana and beyond through their various well designed and structured volunteering and internships projects.
During one of their outreach travels early this year, they came across something beyond their limitation. They met 5 kids out of about 80 kids in one of the villages they were visiting, called Petaase Village. These 5 kids are between ages of 2.5 and 12 years old and they all share a common medical condition, called umbilical hernia. This condition makes these 5 kids stand out among their peers in the community alongside creating discomfort and stomach issues. This medical condition is common in Ghana. An umbilical hernia occurs when the umbilical cord is not cut correctly at birth. Due to the lack of proper training among midwives in the rural parts of Ghana, an umbilical hernia often develops in children after birth.
The families of these kids pleaded and asked for help because they can’t afford to pay for the surgeries and the kids complain of some serious stomach issues as the hernia shrinks and expands. The NGO (WAHEF) really wants to help these kids get surgeries to correct these abnormalities.
The organisation, together with some help from some great individuals, has already made some steps by going back to the village where these beautiful kids live a couple times to check on the kids. Also to meet the families to discuss possible help for the kids. After that they took the kids to the University of Cape Coast Hospital about a month ago to see a surgeon and an anaesthetist for some thorough assessments and laboratory checks.
After the assessment, the doctor gave a quotation for the total costs of all 5 surgeries which he said every surgery will be £100, so £500 in total + an extra £300 which will be used for other necessary post surgery recovery expenses for the 5 kids. The goal of £800 aims to cover this, along with travel expenses of the kids and their families to reach the hospital.
In conclusion, on behalf of these 5 kids, their families, their community, the WAHEF organisation, we would like to ask you lovely people to help and support with this fundraiser campaign to make a very positive change in the lives of these kids. Every little penny counts and a very big thank you in advance for your generous donations.
