Story
### Please now use Wadenhoe PCC's new charity page with Gift Aid for this roof fund at https://www.justgiving.com/campaigns/charity/wadenhoepcc/rooffund ### (01/03/2018)
Thieves vandalised the roof of the north aisle of Wadenhoe's Church of St Michael and All Angels aiming to steal lead on Sunday night, 11th February 2018.
They probably thought the roof was entirely covered in lead, but they thought wrong, because in about 1999 the roofs of the church were mainly covered in stainless steel sheeting, which has weathered to the colour of lead.
However they have left a mess of peeled back stainless steel sheeting, and a north aisle which is no longer weatherproof. The north aisle pews have had to be covered with plastic sheeting for their protection. The bare part of the north aisle roof is now being temporarily covered with weatherproof felting after cutting away the twisted and jagged steel sheeting. The vandals also damaged some of the ancient stonework.
And of course they have upset an entire village!
Please, if you feel you CAN help towards the funds for the repair of the vandalised north aisle roof of Wadenhoe's Church of St Michael and All Angels, the Church Warden says "Regarding your enquiry about the best way to get money to a fund, I would suggest that should anyone wish to make a donation towards the cost of repairing the damaged roof of our active and historical 800 year old church, a cheque payable to the 'Wadenhoe PCC Account Number Two' would be appreciated" [PCC = Parochial Church Council]. The roof is insured, but the cover is limited because of the risk and so will not pay for much of the damage. Cheques can be posted to The Treasurer, Wadenhoe PCC, Fairhope, Wadenhoe, Peterborough PE8 5SU.
This online Justgiving website donation page has now been added by popular demand, for those who prefer donating online by debit/credit card or by Paypal.
You still cannot Gift Aid here yet, unfortunately, but we have just discovered Justgiving has a 'START Plan' for charities new to them which doesn't charge the charity the standard £15 pcm; the Wadenhoe PCC is a charity as it is part of the Church of England. While being a charity, the Wadenhoe PCC is not required to register as such with the Charity Commission as it is excepted by statutory instrument from registering with the Commission because its income is insufficient to warrant doing so. All PCC's (excepted or registered) are charitable bodies and may, inter alia, claim tax refunds on Gift Aid contributions, receive investment income without deduction of income tax and in general enjoy all the other tax reliefs available to registered charities.
So we are looking at setting Wadenhoe PCC up with a START Plan with Justgiving, after which you would then be able to Gift Aid donations given after that. When that happens, a new donations page will start instead of this one.
Sat 24th Feb - Thank you all for being concerned about the vandalised roof of St Michael and All Angels Church, Wadenhoe. This is just a quick update.... This week the roof has hopefully been made watertight temporarily with roofing felt and plastic. We still await the actual estimate for repair, from the company which installed the stainless steel roof sheeting. We now have donations totalling about £700 including cheques received. I understand the insurance covers £7500 of the repair costs. We have made progress towards making Gift Aid possible here. Trev
Weds 28th Feb - Following the receipt of the first estimate for roof repair, from the company which originally fitted the stainless steel sheet in 2010/11, and taking into account the insurance cover, and temporary repair costs etc, we think we can reduce our target from £20K down to £15K. The Gift Aid form and other required paperwork went off to Justgiving on monday - a step nearer to this page being substituted with a Wadenhoe PCC charity fundraising Justgiving page for the roof repair donations with Gift Aid enabled, and also with the ability to receive text donations. Signs have been put up now around the Church to show the roof is lead-free, and explaining the thin stainless steel sheeting roof that was put in its place over a period of 26 weeks in 2010/11 at a cost of £87,000. Hopefully, if thieves can read or understand signs, they won't vandalise our roof again because they will realise it won't be worth their while!
Thu 1st Mar - We have started a new Wadenhoe Parochial Church Council charity fundraising page for this roof fund (see top of this message), which has Gift Aid enabled. The funds raised from this old page can be transferred to Wadenhoe PCC on 6th March 2018. We have in total including cheques about £700 now, thanks. You can also now text a £5 donation, by texting 'SMAA18 £5' to 70070, which can be Gift Aided, and 100% of which will go to Wadenhoe PCC roof fund.
In the Spirit of times past [because this was done as long ago as the 1500's], a list of names (only) of donors to the 2018 St Michael and All Angels Church, Wadenhoe, roof repair fund will be displayed with grateful thanks in the Church when the roof is complete. All donations, of any size, are gratefully accepted. Justgiving accepts donations from £1.
Many thanks!
Love Wadenhoe X
