I'm raising £5000 to Local Charities

Organised by Tim Haines & Laura Groom

Story

Just Giving - DW

The Devizes to Westminster International Canoe race is an ultra marathon that takes place every Easter weekend and is the longest non-stop canoe race in the world.

Starting in Devizes in Wiltshire, the race travels down the Kennet and Avon Canal until it joins the River Thames at Reading, then follows the River Thames to Westminster in the heart of London.

The race is 125 miles long and includes numerous locks, so as well as arduous paddling, there is a considerable amount of running involved too.

We have decided to opt for the non-stop race, paddling and running continuously throughout the day and night until we arrive at Westminster 125 miles later.

We are raising money for a group of charities all meaningful in their own rights to each of us; Tim, Laura and our head of support crew, Abi.

Tim is raising money for the excellent work being done by World Wide Radiology (https://www.worldwideradiology.org/).

This charity, started by a small group of UK based radiologists, provides vital diagnostic services to low and middle-income countries. One of their many projects involves providing mobile-phone-based ultrasound kits in Ghana. These devices, when combined with appropriate training, provide a low-cost mechanism to radically improve diagnostic outcomes, making a huge difference to many people. One of my friends volunteers for World Wide Radiology and I know that the charity is both efficient and effective in meeting its goals. I am confident that the charity is one of the most cost-effective mechanisms for reducing human suffering and is very deserving of your donations!

Laura has decided to continue to raise money for the charities chosen in memory of her dear sister, Liz.

Liz entertained many a crowd with her amazing voice, whether that be as a solo artist or part of the many musical ensembles she had been part of.

Donations will contribute to the costs of the 'Safe Space Studio’ run by Yorkshire Youth & Music offering the highest quality learning opportunities in music making for disadvantaged young people in challenging circumstances, across all musical styles, and according to young people’s needs and aspirations who struggle to attend education or employment. They provide training and development opportunities for musicians, youth workers, teachers and others who work with young people’s music making and learning.

The second charity Laura has chosen is because Liz loved her dogs and specifically her love for German Shepherds. She would spend many a happy time watching the displays of the Police Dogs at local and national events.

Fireside K9 is an independent charity based in West Yorkshire. When a police dog retires from active service they usually go to live with their handler who becomes responsible for all associated costs. Fireside K9 was started to provide financial support for any large unexpected vets bills for the retired police dogs of West Yorkshire Police.

As the Police Dog Handlers say ‘the dogs supported us, now it’s time to return the favour’.

Abi wants to raise money for Celandine Wood Animal Rescue- As a passionate animal lover and dog owner, I admire the dedication of Celandine Wood Animal Rescue in providing refuge and care for animals in need. Their commitment to rehoming, rehabilitation, and offering sanctuary to animals is truly inspiring, especially as they rely entirely on donations to continue their work. I want to support them in securing a permanent home so they can save even more lives and continue their incredible efforts.

By donating to Celandine Wood, you’re helping a small, local rescue provide food, shelter, medical care, and rehabilitation to animals who need it most. Every contribution goes directly to saving lives and making a real difference in our community. Together, we can ensure that this vital organization continues its mission and finds a stable base to grow and thrive. Your support means more animals can have the second chance they deserve

Please, if you wish to make a donation and want your donation to be for a specific charity let us know which charity you would like your donation to specifically go to. If you are happy for an even split, please make your contribution through the link below.

We would like to thank you for all your continued support and belief in us - This is probably one of the most craziest things we both have done but it’s brought a lot of giggles and fun along the way..

See you at Westminster when we can hopefully swap our ‘L-plates’ for ‘P-plates’!
