Story
Parkinson’s Disease is the fastest growing Neurological condition alongside Alzheimer’s. Whilst it was widely considered to affect “older persons, an increasing number of younger people are developing the condition, which particularly has an impact on those with young families and in full-time work, often in the prime of their careers.
Too often, Parkinson’s is associated with symptoms of shakes, tremors and slowness but one of the most unrecognised symptoms is anxiety and depression. Like an iceberg, it isn’t what you see on the surface but what is going on underneath which has the greatest impact.
There is great strength and guidance in the saying that “you can’t change the past, you can only change the future and live in the now.” Positively Parkinson’s was established not to find a cure but to support those living NOW with Parkinson’s to live positively despite their condition. This includes remaining active in work and hobbies.
An increasingly important element is exercise which compliments medication. It is amazing what people with this condition can achieve, given the right support and education. That is the very essence of our Challenge approach. Being active increases determination, confidence and empowers positivity, which improves a person’s well being and also relates to many neurological conditions.
Swimming is a perfect inclusive exercise. It created an ideal challenge for us to demonstrate what can be achieved through a positive mindset, rising to challenges, keeping a perspective on life, and raising awareness and charitable funds.
In September 2021 a Positively Parkinson’s team of 12 individuals swam across the Solent to the Isle of Wight to raise over £47,000 for Cure Parkinson’s with the “Big Splash 2021.” This team included 3 people living with Parkinson’s, demonstrating what could be achieved with determination and support from sponsors who donated so generously.
We aim to make an even bigger impact and involve more commercial partners in this adventure. “The Big Tri 2023” Challenge is looking for your support to help us to deliver the following events:
Swim - Isle of Wight Circumnavigation Relay Swim - July 2023
Bike - John O’Groats to Land’s End by Bike - Easter 2023
Hike - The Big Hike - September 2023
These events aim to raise awareness of Parkinson’s and funds for local and national charities. To run these events, we are looking for support to cover:
- Professional skipper and coach plus boat for the Round the Island swim. This will be provided by Chloe McCardel, the world record holder for swimming the Channel 44 times
- Fuel, accommodation, vehicles, food and bike spares
- Team clothing, banners and flags
We thank you for your support.
