Story
This month (August 2017) the broadcaster Steve Hewlett would have been 59 years old. For the six months since he died those of us who knew him personally or admired him from afar have missed him, maybe even more than we ever expected.
On March 1st I had the privilege as the then Chairman of the Royal Television Society’s TV Journalism Awards of announcing that Steve had won the Judges Award in recognition of his lifetime of work in broadcast journalism. I also announced that the RTS, the Media Society and other organisations and individuals had come together to create a suitable memorial for him. It is called the Steve Hewlett Scholarship and will provide a scholarship initiative for young people from low income households. Steve knew of the plan and wholeheartedly endorsed the ambition.
I’m going to help the fund-raising by running the world’s biggest half-marathon, the Great North Run on Sunday September 10th 2017.If you’d like to support the Steve Hewlett Scholarship please donate here
