Story
Wheelchair Basketball in Dorset is sadly lacking, ok, it's non-existent!! So we intend to change that. Starting January 2018, a new club (14+) will be running taster sessions for "The Dorset Devils" Wheelchair Basketball Club and then a weekly session. Yes, the committee who brought you wheelchair rugby, tennis, badminton etc to Rossmore Leisure Centre are going to start Wheelchair Basketball.
One of the ideas is to have an ex-services based team alongside the other team.
So far we've managed to raise or been donated £16,000 for all the 21 multi-sports wheelchairs. But this does not include the basketballs, insurance, hall hire costs, the spare tyres, inner tubes, the extra costs that come from running a club, so we are selling things or fundraising or well...the usual things you have to do to start these things.
Now we need to raise £1,500+ on top so that we can do the very boring but vital stuff. We need your help though if this is going to go ahead.
In the past 3, nearly 4 years since we started The Dorset Destroyers Wheelchair Rugby Club we have raised over £100,000 from funding, events, stalls you name it, we've done it.
We want to make "The Dorset Devils" the best club in the country, after all you don't set up a club to be the 2nd or 3rd best do you? ;) We want to give disabled people more opportunity to play sports whether military based or from civvy street, and so far we've got 5 varying sports clubs on the go.
But the slight difference with wheelchair basketball is, able bodied people can play alongside disabled in this fast paced sport.
The aim is for The Dorset Devils wheelchair basketball team to be in the league in 18 months time, and to run alongside the wheelchair rugby club. We have the same ethos as the wheelchair rugby, no-one gets paid, ALL money is for the club to keep running.
So the sport is open to EVERYONE, the club will be recreational and for those who want to play in the league. We will be organising friendlies over the next 18 months to get ourselves match ready and also to have fun playing the sport.
We want to make Dorset a powerhouse for disability sports, and who knows....in a few years you could be watching players who live just round the road from you, in the Tokyo Paralympics or the Invictus Games. It has to start somewhere, and with our skills we can make this successful with your help.
