Urgent Appeal: Support Two Gambian Students in Turkey

The Beryl & Winford Manning Foundation is urgently seeking donations to support two Gambian siblings currently studying in Turkey under our sponsorship program. Unfortunately, they have run out of funds to cover their daily living expenses, and without immediate support, their education and well-being are at serious risk.

These two students have worked incredibly hard to pursue higher education, and with your help, we can ensure they continue their studies without the burden of financial hardship. Your donation, no matter how small, will go directly towards their essential needs, including food, accommodation, and transport.

Siblings Success

Back in October 2024, our Foundation issued an urgent appeal to sponsor two Gambian siblings studying in Turkey under a sponsorship program. Unfortunately, after their first year, unforeseen circumstances forced their sponsor to withdraw, leaving them in distress and uncertainty about their future.

Manning Foundation would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dion Manning for his incredible effort in completing a sponsored run to help pay towards the university fees of the two Gambian siblings. Your dedication and generosity are truly inspiring, and your contribution, alongside the support of our many donors, has brought us one step closer to securing their future.

We are thrilled to announce that, thanks to this amazing support, we’ve been able to secure funding for another academic year for the siblings. However, our work is not done. We are still appealing for funds to cover their remaining two and three years of study, ensuring they can successfully complete their degrees.

Your ongoing support means the world to us and to them. Together, we can make this dream a reality! Thank you for making a difference!

Urgent Appeal for a Sponsor

The Beryl & Winford Manning Foundation is urgently seeking $1,800 to support two Gambian siblings currently studying in Turkey under a sponsorship program.

Just over a year ago, Modou and his sister Aminata embarked on a challenging journey to pursue higher education in Turkey through private sponsorship. Modou’s journey across the Atlantic involved a perilous voyage on a migrant boat, which tragically capsized, claiming the lives of almost everyone on board. Modou was among the ten survivors, all in search of a brighter future.

Modou is now pursuing a 5-year degree in Computer Science and has successfully completed his first year, with four years remaining. Aminata is studying Nursing in a 4-year program and has also completed her first year, with three years left.

Why We’re Appealing: Unfortunately, their previous sponsor has recently faced setbacks and can no longer support them, leaving the family in a

state of financial distress.

Financial Needs: Each student needs $900 to cover the costs of their education for another year. While we are hopeful they may eventually find part-time work, additional funding will likely be required next year unless they secure long-term support.

Completing their education is essential not only for their future but also for their family’s wellbeing. As the oldest of five siblings, they aim to support their younger siblings and aging father, who is the sole provider working at a hospital in Banjul, barely making ends meet. Their mother passed away years ago, leaving him to care for their family alone.

Their father is nearing retirement age, and Gambia’s pension system provides minimal support, often not enough to cover basic living costs. Modou and Aminata aspire to help support their family and provide a stable future for their siblings.

Your Support Can Make a Difference: We would be incredibly grateful for any contribution you can make. Alternatively, if someone is willing to sponsor these hardworking students, it would change their lives and provide a future for their family.

Each student needs $900 per year ($1,800 total). Donations or sponsorships can go directly to the university to cover their fees: we can provide you with full name and details of each student if needed.

University Contact:

Erenler, Ahmet Necdet Sezer Campus, 03204 Afyonkarahisar Center, Afyonkarahisar, Turkey

Please help keep their dreams alive and prevent them from resorting to unsafe paths.

Thank you.

FATAMA’S STORY

3 year old Fatama has her whole life ahead of her and with a good education she would have better chances in life.

At the moment Fatama helps her disabled mum sell fruits from their fruit stall on the side of the road at Poco - loco junction in Senegambia. Fatima's Mum Mariama is a disabled women in a wheelchair and she relies on Fatima’s help but she says if she could afford to send her to school she would because she knows the benefit of education, which unfortunately more then half the population don’t get the chance to experience.

So we are asking if there’s anyone willing to sponsor Fatama and her schooling weather it be one year or until she graduates it’s would be up to you.

Fatima is already very smart and very keen to go to school and learn with other children, she such a vibrant & intelligent little girl I believe she would excel once she starts to attend school. Please help us make her life as fulfilling as possible and give her the opportunity to reach her full potential.

Nothing is free in Gambia including education, the price to send Fatima to school would be around £150 this amount would cover her school uniform and her books for the first year.

If you would like to donate any amount to help Fatima please contact us via email or donate to our Just Giving page and put Fatama’s name as a reference,

FATAMA’S STORY PT 2

Unfortunately just after we left Gambia in April 2024 Fatima’s hand was badly burnt with a pot of boiling water, we thought she may have lost the use of that hand but it seems like she’s making a full recovery, the accident has badly scared her hand and stripped away the skin pigment but she is a resilient and happy little girl and it looks like she has made a full recovery and has the full use of the hand so we’re very happy for that result.

Donations can be made direct through this page, please put Fatima as the reference.

HADDY’S STORY

HADDY GEORGE WAS A LADY WE HAVE BEEN HELPING SINCE 2013 BUT SHE UNFORTUNATELY PASSED AWAY IN 2022 LEAVING BEHIND 5 CHILDREN*

🙏🏿❤️🙏🏿

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

⭐THIS IS THE STORY OF HER DAUGHTER - HADDY TOURAY ⭐

Hello everyone,

My name is Haddy and I’m a single parent living in The Gambia.

I was living with my mum until she passed away in 2022 leaving behind myself and my four siblings. My mum was severely ill for a long time, she was always complaining of severe pressure and a burning sensation in her heart. There were days where she would pass out from having breathing difficulties and stabbing pains and tightness in her chest.

My siblings and I are all she had and we did everything we could to help her but could not afford the ongoing hospital treatment. After months of severe pain and suffering unfortunately her heart couldn’t take it anymore and she passed away.

My Mum had a soul of an angel and she was always quick to help other people, my life was definitely a lot better with my Mum around.

A couple of months before my Mum passed she rescued a baby from the streets, she was walking and could hear a baby crying, the baby's Mum just dumped the baby in a box like rubbish. My Mum knew the baby's Mother and tried many times to talk to her about caring for the baby but she was a drug addict and the message was not getting through. My Mum wouldn’t leave the baby on the street to die, so she decided to take the baby as her own child and bring it up.

A few months later my Mum passed away and since I’m the oldest of my siblings the responsibility of the family has fallen on me including the brining up of the baby. Ever since my Mum passed away life has been extremely difficult for me as I have my own Daughter to raise who is 7 years old.

Mr T started helping my Mum a long time ago back in 2013 when I was just a little girl. I know my Mum kept in contact with him all this time as Mr T helped my Mum to open her shop in 2018 but she lost contact with him sometime during the covid when she fell sick.

I was desperate to talk to Mr T to help my Mum but by the time I found his number it was too late and my Mum was very sick and passed away soon after I made contact. Since then Mr T has tried to help me and my family and I thank God for him. The children are in school but their schooling is very on and off as I can’t afford to send them all the time.

It’s hard for me because my brother born after me couldn’t bear our situation with all the struggling so he decided to use the "BACK WAY" to get into Europe using the boats just so he could find work and hopefully help our family, but it’s been almost a year now since he left and he still has not reached his destination, right now he is stuck in Algeria at the border trying to get into Morocco. He will be stuck there until he can find the rest of the money to pay his agent and I really can’t help him as I’m struggling myself trying to look after the rest of our family. The little baby is now 2 years old and it’s getting harder for me as the kids are all getting older, I’m really suffering and asking for some help.

If there’s anyone out there that can help me so that I can take care of the children, God will bless you because I am really tied up in this situation, it has been very very hard for me these past few years.

Mr T is giving me some money to help me start a little clothes selling business which I sell from the street, my dream is to one day open my own shop selling clothes and doing make up and beauty treatments, I would really like that but first I must look after the children.

I would really like help with the children’s schooling, because without education you don’t have a good future and that has always been my problem not having much education so I want to do better for my children.

So please if there’s any body out there willing to help me I would be truly grateful, God Bless you.

Donations can be made direct through this page, please put Haddy as the reference.

If you want to use alternative methods to make your donations please contact us by email.

Thank you Mr T and the Beryl and Winford manning foundation 🙏🏿

Baidy’s Story

Baidy is a friend I met in Gambia in 2023, he is severly disabled, he’s a humble man with an infectious personality which pulled on my heartstrings making me want to help him.

So on getting back to the UK Baidy would always cross my mind, I decided that when I go back to The Gambia I would pay him another visit and see what I could do to help his situation.

Baidy lost both his hands and suffered severe burns all over he’s body at the age of 12 years old after being electrocuted.

He is now in his 50’s and through most of his life he has had no medical or financial help.

It is hard to imagine how life has been for him, growing up in Gambia has its own challenges even as an able bodied person, but as a disabled person with no hands it makes life extreemly hard.

After the accident he was unable to do even the basic things for himself like feeding, toilet needs, washing or even scratch his nose and zip up his trousers, the simple things we all take for granted.

Life has been a struggle but he remains positive and he loves life, music and football, apparently I’ve been told he’s a good footballer lol.

But one thing I know he is a natural musician with a talent for playing the bongo drums even without hands. He plays with precision, rhythm and good timing.

Baidy is a proud man and doesn’t like to beg and depend on others, if he could get the money to purchase some drums he could make his own living entertaining the tourists and it would help to make him feel more independant and restore his self esteem.

Help us bring a little light into Baidy’s life.

We are appealing on Baidy’s behalf to anyone who would like to donate to help or even more amazing donate a set of drums.

I believe from what we are told that a pair of drums will cost around £100.

If anyone would like to donate money clothes or the drums to Baidy you can donate through this page or use our bank details below. Please put Baidy as the reference.

Donations can be made direct through this page, please put Baidy as the reference.

St Bridget's Nursery School

This is our second appeal as we never raised any funds towards this appeal we went back again in March 2024 just to see if the school had any other donors to help them build the toilets, but unfortunatley there had been no donations and we could see that no work had been started

The Beryl & Winford Manning Foundation Visited St Bridget’s Nursery School back in November 2023 where we asked for your help to move and rebuild new toilets for the children, for two main reasons;

(1) The existing toilets are very far from the school and the children have accidents on the way to the toilet because of the distance

(2) the hygiene of the toilets are enough to make the kids sick and also give the little girls infections.

On our part with so many different projects we are funding we never had enough funds to sustain the build of the toilets.

So now we’re appealing again on behalf of the school if there’s anyone interested in helping to move this project forward the total price to re - build new toilets is £350.00

If you would like to help you can donate direct through this page, please put the name of the school as the reference.

If you want to use alternative methods to make your donations please contact us by email.

Thank you Mr T and the Beryl and Winford manning foundation 🙏🏿

Thank you.
