    Story

In a town rich in history, the Chantry is one of its best loved and most memorable buildings. It may originally have been a priests’ house, as its name and proximity to the church suggest, but this is not known with certainty. Its age is also something of a mystery. The official listing is 17thC. but the substantial timber frame and crown post construction indicate a date at least 100 years earlier. Even a 14thC. origin has been suggested. Whatever the case, it is quite possible its early life may have coincided with the building of the church itself.

The present restoration involves much needed repairs to the building with minimal alterations. The original historic fabric will remain unaltered , and the integrity of the 1930’s Arts and Crafts restoration respected.

Many thanks to all those who have supported our fundraising campaign for the renovation of The Chantry. Although we have not been able to reach our ambitious target and are therefore unable to currently carry out our plans to turn the building into a community hub, we will use the money we have raised, along with other funding, to begin renovations to this historic building to ensure its future for Thaxted.
