Story

From Andreas to the Athens. Team Mad Manx chase the sun across 17 countries in support of Manx Children’s Art Therapy and The Children’s Centre Isle of Man.

This summer a group of naive and foolhardy friends from The Isle of Man and Australia embark on a new manic motoring mission. Still nursing back pain from their escapades to Mongolia in 2019 when the team successfully drove a rainbow fur covered Toyota Starlet 12,000 miles across the globe, Team Mad Manx regroup once more for another wacky race to Greece in 2022.

Whilst the destination might not be as remote this time around, the prospect of navigating and wild camping their way across 17 countries in this crazy post-covid world is guaranteed to be anything but plain sailing. Take two 20 year old cars (generously gifted for a bottle of wine a piece), throw in some snow covered mountain passes and a few long running geopolitical tensions along the way, and you have yourself a recipe for adventure. All that stands between the team and Acropolis there on in is 3 weeks of pure driving discomfort. What could possibly go wrong.

With the expectation of border bureaucracy, questionable reliability and lateral flow tests galore, nothing has been planned too far in advance. The team will set off without any set route or expectations. The only thing that is assured is that cars and costumes will be as wacky and vibrant as ever. Where the team hang their hat each night will be dictated by luck alone; be it the back of the car or a roadside ditch, they aren't going to make it easy for themselves. They aren’t exactly going to blend in either.

Team Mad Manx will be aiming to share the trip across local and social media, with the journey made into a feature film at a later date….and it’s all in a bid to support two truly worthwhile causes. Having first taken to the road less travelled back in 2016 when they successfully piloted 3 colourful auto-rickshaws up the length of India, Team Mad Manx returned in 2019 to tackle The Mongol Rally in their trusty 25 year old Starlet. They set off again this time around in search of adventures new, aiming to support and raise awareness about the fantastic new collaboration between the Children’s Centre Isle of Man and Manx Children's Art Therapy. All proceeds raised from the trip will be split 50/50 between these two charities.

Team Mad Manx are hoping to set sail from the Isle of Man on the 9th July, with the aim of reaching the Acropolis, Athens in time for sunrise precisely 3 weeks later. Their journey will see them attempt to travel through a plethora of countries and terrains including Switzerland, Austria, Slovakia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia and Albania to name a few. Keen followers will be able to support the team in their endeavours and track their progress through the ‘Team Mad Manx’ pages on Facebook and Instagram; joining in the conversation using the hashtag #TeamMadManx.
