Story

The watch office, or control tower at RAF Tangmere oversaw the most important aerial battles in British history, the most perilous covert flights behind enemy lines, and great feats of valour by some of our most celebrated flying aces. In later years, the control tower witnessed new air speed records and the first flying lesson of HM King Charles III when Prince of Wales, before the base finally closed in 1970. The very existence of the building is threatened today after almost 40 years of dereliction and vandalism.

Already listed, the building has also been placed on the SAVE Britain's Heritage 'Heritage at Risk' Register and a working community of historians, councillors, community representatives and academics have now come together to save and restore this iconic building so that it can once again proudly tell its fascinating and pivotal story in the recent history of our nation, and take its place as a new community facility for the village of Tangmere and the wider area.

We are now asking for donations to build on what has already been raised to help move the project to the next stage, Having engaged an architectural consultant we can now move to the first stage in the RIBA project planning process. Please give generously, Tangmere Control Tower needs you!

The tower is part of our local history and was a vital part of RAF Tangmere during the war and should be saved.
