Story
On September 7, 2017 the southern coast of Mexico was hit by an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 8.1, the strongest earthquake recorded in Mexico in over a century. This earthquake left behind massive destruction in the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas. Mother nature took a toll of at least 100 people lives and 41,000 homes damaged while in areas closer to the epicenter buildings were reduced to rubble.
Less than 2 weeks later, and without enough time to recover, a second earthquake hit the state of Puebla (135 kms away from Mexico City) and regardless of the lower magnitude (7.1) the damage caused was extense among 5 states in central Mexico, including Mexico City. Only in Mexico City an estimate of 44 buildings collapsed including 16 schools, supermarkets, and residential areas while dozens of other buildings suffered structural damages posing the risk of future collapse. Rural areas in the states of Puebla, Morelos, Chiapas and Oaxaca shared the same luck with hundreds of homes being destroyed. Only 24 hours later the dead count rises to an estimate of 225 people, including 22 children, with several areas yet to be covered by the rescue teams.
The people in Mexico have united to support the less fortunate by providing a hand to the rescue teams, medicines, tools, food and shelter. However, it is not enough and for the upcoming months it is crucial to count with the funds to aid the people who lost their homes in their process to recover. More medicines, food, shelter, bed sheets, covers, towels, basic need items, and many other things are required to supply the shelters that will receive and host the affected people.
The funds raised will be transferred to Fundacion Carlos Slim who will match our donation with $5 pesos for every peso we donate. The Foundation will use the funds to support emergency services in the short term and for the reconstruction of schools, health centers and homes in the future. Each British pound is worth approx. $22 pesos so our help counts double and small amounts could provide substantial help. As an example, a donation of 25 pounds is enough to pay for an inflatable mattress, 6 pounds can buy 40 ecologic diapers, and 10 pounds are enough for a full set of bed sheets and towels.
As a Mexican I would like to thank in advance to all those who took the time to read our story, to support our cause or to even spent a few minutes to pray for the people in Mexico.
