Story
In 2018 we celebrate 100 years since some women got the right to vote!
Sheffield has a proud history of strong women, and at the start of the 20th Century, it became a proactive arena for public action and debate in the drive to secure Votes for Women.
Mrs Pankhurst sent her daughter Adela as a local organiser for the Sheffield Women's Social and Political Union and they opened a 'suffrage shop' at 26-28 Chapel Walk. The Sheffield shop was one of the first to open, and in 1909, others across the UK followed suit.
A shop still exists at this location but the numbers have been erased, as if to wipe out all recognition and the history of the Votes for Women campaign.
The Girls Equality Group, have been striving to attain permanent recognition of the sacrifices made and the rights attained, by having a plaque placed on 26-28 Chapel Walk and your contribution is much appreciated to make this a reality.
