Story

Stop Portland Waste Incinerator campaign is fighting for the communities of Portland, Wyke and Weymouth to stop a proposal to build a huge waste incinerator plant on the north-east coast of the iconic Isle of Portland.

Please donate now as much as you can as we need to be ready to commission specialist professional Planning, Ecology and Air Quality reports, as soon as the planning application comes in. Together we can stop this threat!

The incinerator really isn’t needed - the UK has enough incinerator capacity – and, our research shows it will: release tiny dangerous particles into the air - that cannot yet be monitored; increase health risks – however small - for our children ; bring more lorries thundering along our busy roads ; possibly need to be ‘fed’ in the future by waste imported from outside the UK ; create a big, unsightly blot on our beautiful landscape and coast ; discourage recycling – and possibly not create many jobs for locals at all!

Please help our campaign by donating to fund 3 professional reports i.e., Planning, Ecology and Air Quality in order that we can beat this proposal at the planning stage. Also to fund other costs such as leaflet printing and advertising. Thank you!

We are incredibly grateful to the Dorset Campaign for the Protection of Rural England for their generous donation of £2,500 towards the cost of commissioning a specialist planning report. Thank you also to those of you who so kindly responded to our urgent appeal to reach the £2,500 target for the Dorset CPRE match-funded donation. However the cost of the planning report has now increased. Therefore please donate as generously as you can, as we still have a shortfall of over £4,000 to cover our minimum costs.

Incineration is a bad idea. Too much air contamination, and Weymouth is downwind from Portland. Recycling should be the first consideration.
