Story
Mr M's Miles for Maths and Music!
for Grove Road Community Primary School, Harrogate.
Keep on Running...
I’m running every day for 200 days, averaging 5 miles a day. I’m raising money (hopefully a pound-per-mile) for extra Maths and Music resources in our school. I began on 19th December 2018 and am due to complete on 7th July 2019.
Money’s too tight to mention.
My school works hard to cope with funding cuts. They do a great job providing our core resources, but there’s little left for those extra things which make a difference. We’re not well-off and unlike many schools in the Harrogate area we can’t rely on a stream of extra income from our families.
Make that change…
Grove Road’s a different and special place. We offer stability, community, hope and a future to many vulnerable children. We spend considerable time working with pupils and families who need extra support, providing a secure and welcoming inclusive environment.
• 27 different languages are spoken by our learners.
• Approximately one third of pupils speak English as an additional language, more than any other primary school in North Yorkshire.
• Local school of choice for minority ethnic families, currently supporting several refugee families.
• Around 1 in 5 pupils have a special educational need or learning disability, more than 90% of all other primary schools.
• Around 19% of our pupils are ‘disadvantaged’ - more than approximately 80% of North Yorkshire Primary Schools.
• Approximately 58% of pupils live in households with one parent present (Y6 Growing up in North Yorkshire 2016).
• A number of families have social worker involvement - considered to live in chaotic circumstances.
• For many of our families in the Low Harrogate area, the deprivation index indicates being in the bottom 5% nationally for living environment.
• School of preference for placing children from the Harrogate Women’s Refuge and the Hopscotch Looked-after children team.
Thank you in anticipation!

5 years ago200 days ✔️ 1,000 miles ✔️ #MrMsMiles 🏁 DONE 🏁 A very enjoyable 13th place in Sunday's Burn Valley Half-Marathon has brought an incredible 200 days to a close. Thank you so much to everyone who has contribute and shared - we're delighted with the funds raised and they are already benefitting the school! We have put Music resources in place and have exciting Maths things lined-up for September. The funding page will remain open for a short time yet, but we've already raised well in excess of £2,600. Truly gobsmacked. Thank you 👏👏👏

5 years agoNot long to go now! The challenge has included all sorts of running & conditions, but this weekend will probably be the toughest... We're camped at Bramham Park for Mizuno Endure 24hr - an incredible event for teams and individuals. Here with 35 Striders, I'm in a team of 4, relay running between noon Saturday and noon Sunday. So around six hours total each, on the lovely 5-mile lap. It will have to be steady in the heat, so night-time will be very welcome! My efforts should appear on Strava here: https://www.strava.com/athletes/13215591 MrM

6 years agoDay 175/200. Been quiet too long - apologies... A lot's happened: time away at Easter meant some nice coastal runs and the race season has brought more pacey evenings and weekends! A week of illness was survived - out of bed to do just 400m one evening - but now things are back to normal. All this mileage seems to help me too, and last weekend finished a lifetime best - 2nd place - with my club in the Great Knaresborough Bed Race! The daily runs and miles continue though and the £s continue to come in. The school and I are so, so grateful. S.

When not teaching and spending time with my family, one of my hobbies is to run. On 19th December 2018, I began a 'streak' which continued into 2019. I decided to do something useful with it, so have targeted 200 days of fundraising, which I'm due to complete on 7th July 2019.
