    Story

    A little bit about me

Hi, my name is Stan Everitt, and I'm a member of West Devon Explorers :)

A while ago, I joined the scouting movement, and I've never regretted it. On the night I joined, there was a meeting about the World Scout Jamboree next year in South Korea (for more info about what the WSJ is, have a look at the next paragraph). Watching the video they showed us, my friends and I felt so excited - it looked like the trip of a lifetime! So when they asked who wanted to apply, I knew that I had to. A little while later, there was a selection camp for those of us who wanted to go, at which we did lots of different fun activities and learnt about the Jamboree. A few weeks after that, we got our letters. Fingers crossed!

On the day that we were supposed to get them, I remember being so excited - had I got in, had I not?? I opened it...and my eyes lit up! I was so, so happy - me and my mum started dancing around the kitchen, and we were both crying! Honestly, I felt elated. So....

What is the World Scout Jamboree?

The World Scout Jamboree (or WSJ for short) is a massive event every 4 years of 40,000 scouts from around the world - did you know scouting is one of the biggest movements on Earth? - in which we get to meet (/make friends with) scouts from many other countries, experience different cultures, do LOADS of amazing activities, and more. This one is the 25th WSJ, and it's being held in South Korea. It will take place this summer, from the 27th of July to the 15th of August (including the pre and post events)! In short, it's a once in a lifetime experience, and I feel so, so lucky that I was picked to go.

    Before I get there

Before the actual event, there are multiple training camps, which in themselves sound really fun. Also, to be able to go to the WSJ, I have to raise a lot of money - roughly £4,300. In order to raise this money, I'm going to do lots of events, make some things to sell, hopefully get a job, and really any ideas I can come up with. If you want to see what I'm doing to raise the money, please have a look at the Instagram page that I recently set up, which is called https://www.instagram.com/wheeling_the_width/

Why is it called wheeling the width? Because I'm planning to wheel the equivalent width of Devon - roughly 70 miles - in my wheelchair (I'm a part time wheelchair user). Some of the money I make will be donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital - they've helped me a lot over the years - and also to SMA UK (SMA stands for Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which is the condition that I have). If you felt you could make any donation to help me reach my goal, then I'd really appreciate it!

    Thank you!!

    Stan Everitt ;)
