Story

St Sylvester’s Church is a beautiful, largely 14th and 15th century church, in a remote rural setting in the South Hams district of South Devon. It is the most southerly parish in Devon and is a popular holiday and tourist area. The Church contains significant medieval woodwork, including a Rood Screen, Parclose Screen, barrel roofs with painted bosses and a carved and painted 15th century pulpit. Recently 18th century wall paintings have been discovered and partly revealed. The graveyard has graves of shipwrecked sailors.
The Church is in a poor condition, with the risk of losing it as a community asset and the loss of its medieval heritage, so we applied for a National Lottery Grant to carry out essential repairs and were awarded £384,300 in June 2020.
Work started on the Church in January 2021, but the total cost of this project is in excess of £480,000 so we urgently need to raise more funds. For anyone who knows the area, or has connections with it, we are appealing for your help. We are a small community, and the Church is a very important part of our heritage, so please help us raise £5,000 by donating £5 per piece to complete the above virtual jigsaw puzzle.
