    Story

The island nation of Madagascar has developed its own distinct ecosystems and extraordinary wildlife since it split from the African continent an estimated 160 million years ago. Approximately 95 percent of Madagascar’s reptiles, 89 percent of its plant life, and 92 percent of its mammals exist nowhere else on Earth.

The aim is to enable field based research on endangered lemur species and provide a sound scientific knowledge base upon which to build and implement effective conservation strategies for the island. Ultimately this will help the people of Madagascar find alternative and sustainable ways of living to safeguard the future of both themselves and the lemurs.

Madagascar's political turmoil has left existing environmental laws that would have protected forests and wildlife unenforced. Throughout the nation forests have been burned and chopped down to make room for crops and for timber to feed the illegal hardwood trade. This is threatening hundreds of species of animals and plants, including an endangered primate native to Madagascar – the lemur – of which there are around a hundred species, all endemic to the island (i.e. found nowhere else on earth!!!). To top it off lemurs are also being hunted for meat. Over hunting has already caused extinctions in Madagascar and if it continues these rare lemurs could be next.

Solar panel systems are required to provide power to two field stations set up by The Association Européenne pour l'Étude et la Conservation des Lémuriens (AEECL). There is also a requirement for solar panels for a community based development program to power a local school.

As well as enabling field based scientific research the project set up by the AEECL and Bristol Zoological Society is helping the Malagasy save their natural heritage through development programmes and conservation education. This includes help with cultivation, reforestation, fire control and protection, schools and the provision of drinking water.

      Update from the Page owner

Due to the donations received, I have been able to buy a large quantity of equipment needed to make this project happen. The money raised is being put towards solar panels for a system that will give off-grid power to a research station in the Sahamalaza national park. With recent news headlines about world wild animal decline and extinction, it feels ever more important to be supporting the crucial conservation work carried out there. I am so lucky to be one of a team of three, going out to install the system. We leave this Thursday!

I did it! My official time was 53:22! It was a scorcher of a day which made it really tough but I am proud I managed to still get it done in a reasonable time, especially as I have never done anything like that before :-) Thank you SO MUCH everyone for donating to my cause! xx

I am doing my first ever long distance charity run! And (foolishly?) setting myself a target time to finish the Bristol 10km in less than 50 mins. I am doing it to help fund the installation of three off-grid solar power systems in remote areas of Madagascar.
