I've raised £8000 to buy a landing craft for the Scottish Coastal Clean Up by taking part in a sponsored 24 hour beach cleaning challenge on the Isle of Skye.

Story

We are committed to helping clear the beautiful Scottish coastline of plastic pollution, working together with local groups and beach cleaning organisations.

After running several beach clean events on mainland Scotland, in April 2022 the Scottish Coastal Clean Up initiative gathered more than 75m3 of marine detritus on the Isle of Ulva over one weekend. We were only able to remove the marine plastic from the island with the help of local businesses Mull Charters and Turus Mara, and Bakkafrost, which sent its boats with a crew to help.

Our time on Ulva highlighted one of the main issues faced by island beach cleaning communities – what to do with the litter once it has been gathered. After this experience we decided to change our focus slightly and now have access to a larger 14m boat that can hold a lot of the collected marine litter to remove it from the islands.

We are now looking to raise money to put towards a smaller landing craft that can manoeuvre between the big boat and shore to take volunteers to clean areas hard to access by land, and remove the rubbish collected back out to the bigger boat.

In April we were completely shocked at the levels of marine plastic pollution we found on the Isle of Skye, and we are now returning to complete a 24 hour litter picking challenge to remove as much of the plastic from the beach as possible from 7-8th July.

Any donation would be very gratefully received as we take on this mammoth task!
