Story

No to a new A27: Weʼre raising £5,000 to help prevent the devastation of our Sussex countryside by the planned superhighway between Lewes and Polegate .

We need finance for more independent and professional analysis to counter the slanted arguments already put out by the road lobby; there will be more to come. Funding will also help us spread our messages more effectively - and we need to do it fast. Help us to fight this terrible scheme. Every penny subscribed will help us preserve a beautiful stretch of English countryside. Please give generously and pass it on."

IMMINENT DANGER TO THE RURAL COUNTRYSIDE OF THE LOW WEALD IN EAST SUSSEX

Residents of Wealden villages are becoming increasingly concerned as they discover the secretive development of a plan to drive a new super highway through the heart of the ancient countryside between Polegate and Lewes.

This scheme would cost taxpayers well in excess of £600 million and, as it sears its way below the South Downs, it will inevitably decimate wildlife, hugely increase pollution (toxic air pollution, noise, lighting, etc.), wipe out a historic field system and blight views from the South Downs National Park.

The reason for this destruction, claim a group of local politicians and staff at Highways England, will be a reduction in the journey time by a few minutes for cars travelling between Eastbourne and Brighton. Even this is highly dubious as it will surely lead to increased delays at existing black spots such as the Copthall, Beddingham and Southerham roundabouts.

All this becomes even more puzzling as the expensive scheme is entirely unnecessary. A more sensible option is to further improve sections of the existing A27, modifying junctions and adding another carriageway in the many places this can easily be achieved. Such a solution would be more cost effective, more acceptable to those living in rural communities and would give credence to politicians’ claims that they are wanting to sustain areas of valuable countryside.

We have able and willing volunteers, a bank account and an organisation but we need your support. We need finance for publicity, room bookings, and getting expert advice to counter the propaganda put out by the road lobby.

Please help us to fight this terrible scheme. Every penny subscribed will help us preserve a beautiful stretch of English countryside.
