ADERS DUIKER - Africa's most endangered antelope, and only to be seen in Zanzibar Island. I have been doing data collection on the critically endangered Aders duiker for 17 months and the more I learn about them, the more determined I am that my PhD does not only result in a paper degree and a thesis gathering dust, but to ACTUALLY help save the species.
There are most likely less than 200 left in existence. A lack of funding is the biggest cause for slow progress in research and conservation efforts. Conservationists have been doing their best since 1997 to raise awareness and provide opportunities for preserving the population and much has been done yet no major drive has resulted to jolt the species out of their tumbling decline. No genetic baseline exists for this species, and making informed population recovery decisions going forward is very difficult without knowing how diverse the remaining population is at this stage of the fight.

My project has covered many aspects of their ecology but to bring the management plan and recommendations together, I need to raise more funds to do a genetic analyses on my sample population.

There is no more time left for the Aders duiker. It is now, or never. We need to raise more international awareness and at least enough funds to do the analyses so a critical action plan can be made for the next 5 years.
