Story
Hi, I'm Sara, I have been a full time carer for my mum for most of my life, as she had both types of Arthritis throughout her body from her early 30's and heart conditions, but worked as a nurse, ward sister, social worker and also looked after dad who was also disabled, and brought me up and looked after me, as well as her extended family and friends when and while she could.
She ended up having to leave work with her illness's, but tried to fundraise for charities etc to do what she could. But in the last few years her health has gotten worse. And had to have a major op (which they didn't want to do because of her heart conditons) which was to remove a tumour in her bowels and left her with a colostomy for life. She also has type 2 diabetes, so has problems with that, and been taken into hospital a few times with pancreatitis but luckily got through. But has now ended up needing to use a motorised wheelchair indoors and out, with her body being in so much pain to stand or walk much anymore.
I am now asking for help to try to raise the money, that it is going to take to change our Garden to be wheelchair accessible throughout, as its a big garden and want her to feel she can get to most of it, with paths and patio areas, and some high raised beds for her to reach easily and plant, as soon as possible for her to get out in it and enjoy it, whilst she still can.
I have asked the councils facilities grant place who have said they cannot help, and a garden for disabled charity could not help. So someone suggested to make a page here, and hope its successful.
The money would be spent on getting in professionals to take away most of the grass and gravel that wheelchairs cannot cope with, and replace with paved areas, and paths, and a seating area, that she can ride her Wheelchair in most of the garden where she use to be able to walk, and decide where she wants to sit as the sun is in different positions throughout the day. Some high raised beds so she could reach from the Wheelchair and do a little planting too.
It would mean the world to me, to be able to get the garden accessible for her, as she has lived with so much pain and illness all her life, lost most of her family members now including my dad, and has coped as best she can with it all, still keeping a smile on her face and getting on as best she can.
I know she was so pleased and chuffed with our garden over the years we have been here, and loved being out in it, but is getting depressed and fed up seeing it just through the windows. So I really want to help her, but also, for me to do any work in the garden, I have to have her out with me, so I can see her, know she is fine, and look after her, so have had to leave a lot of it, and be inside with her. Thanks for taking the time to read this and thanks in advance for any help what so ever :)
