Iʼve raised £1,621 to help Samuel learn a form of communication, using an EyeGaze computer, a system he is using at college and showing great potential!

    Story

it is heartbreaking and frustrating, not knowing how much pain Samuel is in. He doesn't show it & has no communication except for eye pointing. This also causes problems trying to work out what Samuel wants to do, where he wants to go, whether his is hungry, thirst or in pain. Although I get more of my fair share of hugs, Samuel has never been able to say "I love you Mum". Most of the last 21 years has been pure guess work. At college, they have discovered a system that may finally give him a proper form of communication. It is called ‘Eye Gaze’. He has been having regular sessions with the system and he is doing amazingly well, already making decisions and choices independently! One day, he may actually be able to say (through the computer) "I love you Mum" as well as letting me know what he wants, if he is in pain or simply, what he wants to wear that day!

Samuel had his appointment on Thursday. I am devastated to report that we have been advised against the surgery. Due to his severe obstructive sleep apnoea, any anaesthetic is dangerous, plus it would be a really major surgery with a long and difficult recovery and the success rate is only 50-50 so with the expertise of the surgeon, we have made the decision not to go ahead. He will be having regular steroid injections to help with pain. Please go to the 4 steps for Samuel (or my own) Facebook page for more details. Thank you for your support x

Samuel’s appointment on Thursday is to be at the Spire Bushey Hospital. Even though the appointment was made through the RNOH, the surgeon who was recommended actually works at Spire Bushey. Thank you for all your support. I will post an update after the appointment xx
