Story

Founder and owner of landscape business, Wigan Artificial Grass Co, Phil and his partner Tammy are set to run the highest marathon in the world this year on Mt Everest to raise awareness for a Wigan focused initiative, Otistic which aims to provide inclusive environments and resources in public spaces for children with autism seeking emergency and routine medical treatment in A&E departments and surgeries.

On 29th May 2025 Phil and Tammy from Wigan Artificial Grass Co will run the highest marathon in the world on Mt Everest starting their 14 day hike from Lukla, Nepal hiking up to 17,598 ft to Everest Base Camp, then will run 26.2 miles. The Everest Marathon is an Annual International High Altitude Adventure Sports Event held on May 29 from Mt. Everest Base Camp, Celebrating the Historic Everest Ascent by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary on May 29, 1953.

Phil and Tammy met Jessie Hunt, founder of the Wigan based comminity initiative Otistic CIC and Otis Voice charity fundraiser through a family friend.

Jessie is parent and carer to her son Otis, who is nonverbal autistic, has a learning disability, and has sensory processing disorder. Jessie for the past 3 years has been championing change in public service spaces, like hospital A&E departments and doctors surgeries to make them more inclusive for Otis and other autistic children in the Wigan Borough who have specific sensory needs and find these spaces traumatic.

As a mum to a child with special educational needs I know first hand just how much we have to fight for EVERYTHING our children need and deserve. I don’t think equal access to healthcare or services should be one of these things we are being made to fight for. It has become my passion to make these spaces accessible for the people who need it.

Jessie, with the help of Wigan Hospital’s charity, Three Wishes has successfully set up The Otis Project which funds a secure, safe sensory space within Wigan hospital’s A&E department providing resources and support for nurses and doctors providing emergency treatment to Autistic children. But she doesn't want to stop there and needs more support...

We want to create a space like this this in every hospital , doctors surgery, transport hub and public space starting by providing “Calm Carts” which are a package of sensory toys, resources and advise on how to create the best possible experience for the children, parents and carers and public sector professionals when using these spaces.

Typically one case costs £1740 each as they include medical grade sensory equipment, so if we could raise enough fund for just two of these we would be made up!

Phil and Tammy would like to support this cause by raising £3500 through this event which will support funding for "Calm Carts" which will be gifted to spaces that need them the most. All funds raised through this event will go straight to the cause.
