Story

Please support my attempt to "Run the Ridgeway", 7-8 March 2020.

The Bradfield Club Peckham was established in 1912 by former pupils and friends of Bradfield College. Since then the Club has been offering young people in Peckham a safe environment in which to play, learn, eat, and find individual support. Last summer the club spread its wings and experienced the transformative power of outdoor education in the Lake District for the first time. My aim is to help the staff at the club to build on this momentum, by supporting the introduction of the Duke of Edinburgh Award at the club, raising funds to help members attempt a Bronze Award Expedition.

As a teacher and DofE Manager at Bradfield College, I am blessed with beautiful surroundings, quality equipment and ample financial and logistical support with which to deliver memorable expeditions for some 150 pupils each year. It seems only right, and entirely in keeping with the ethos of DofE, that we should strive to provide some of these opportunities for the club that our school helped to found over 100 years ago.

In this spirit, I will try to raise some awareness for our project by attempting to complete the full Ridgeway National Trail. The route travels in a northeasterly direction for 87 miles (140 Km) from its start in the World Heritage Site of Avebury. As Britain’s oldest road The Ridgeway still follows the same route over the high ground used since prehistoric times by travelers, herdsmen and soldiers. Typically the route is attempted over 5-6 days. My ambition is to complete it in under 24 hours.

So basically, I'm going to have a crack at a 87 mile ultra trail marathon, on my own, in under 24 hours, on 7/8 March. I don't know if I will manage that, but it's nice to have a target! I'm hoping that I will learn something in the process, or at the very least, that the whole silly escapade will help us raise much needed funds to support the kinds of outdoor experiences that I have been so lucky to enjoy, for so long. We are aiming for £10 a mile and your support would be fantastic!
