Story
Please click here: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/roxie-cavachon-treatments to see my new crowdfunding page to cover Roxie's diagnostic tests & treatment
Roxie is 8 years 7 months old and recently was diagnosed with early signs of heart disease, PRA (gradual blindness) and SARDS (sudden unexplained blindness). It all happened quite suddenly with no prior warning. She also put on 2.5kg of weight following blindness, which we are told is normal.
Looking back her behaviour changed aged 4 when she suddenly became fearful of strangers and at 5 became depressed, which led us to get her a friend. Her anxiety improved with her new friend but I just knew there was something else going on. She was just extremely emotional and sad most of the time. Several vet visits led to treating her for the symptoms i.e. managing her depression and training techniques for her stranger anxiety. At no point did a vet suggest checking her eyes and she showed no signs of blindness until a sudden onset (SARDS episode) a week ago (30th Jan 2017).
She is now a little happier but still having moments of distress, falling over or bumping into things. She appears to see better in dim light and be completely blind in bright lights. She isn't totally blind yet but the eye specialist said retina damage is bad so won't be long.
My vet has offered to do an auto immune blood test which will rule out thyroid or hormonal imbalance issues that could have caused blindness. She is also booked in for her teeth as some are lose and the bacteria can worsen her heart condition. We just hope they don't take too many :(
Unfortunately we didn't realise how restrictive her existing pet insurance policy was and now she is excluded for heart and eyes from cover having upgraded up from just £500 a year per condition. We don't want to compromise on her treatment so we have created this page to try and get some additional support. The vet predicts between 1k - 4k costs per year as her heart disease progresses. We need to do regular heart checks and eventually meds. Any money raised will be kept aside for Roxie only.
I can arrange for verification email on request.

8 years agoWhat a day. Roxie is now under anaesthetic for her teeth - they want to take 17 teeth out! I tried to go in with her but she was so so anxious and scared. It was horrible (those that don't know teeth issues suspected to be contributing factor to both blindness and heart disease). Just waiting anxiously for the call to go collect her. Hopefully the last hurdle for a while, but still more tests to be done to get to the bottom of her issues, which includes increasing skin lumps.

8 years agoSo proud of Roxie. She has been blind for almost a month now and adapted so well. Her own little technique on the stairs and ducked head to nudge her way around new spaces. She has gone from a spread legged slow meander to a confident spring in her step on walks, even though sometimes she still has a stumble, she springs back. Now post her first groom without sight, this is the first time she has settled on the other end of the sofa without me holding and stroking her. Never have I been so relieved to see her so peaceful.
