Story

The illuminated spire and clock faces of St Mary’s, an 18C Grade II listed church have proved extremely popular. They act as a beautiful waymark from every direction. The historic Church spire is visible from London Bridge, Tower Bridge, from the Thames Path, from across the river in Wapping, and to people travelling along the river on boats and ships at night.

The soft illuminations highlight on a daily basis after dusk, the architectural details of this magnificent church and make the public realm more engaging, foster community wellbeing and pride of place. The area is also much more inviting after dusk.

Rotherhithe has played a key role in London's maritime history, and St Mary’s Church has many historic connections, including links to the Mayflower and HMS Temeraire.

The subtle illuminations of the two figurines on The Old Schoolhouse, the building opposite the Church and the Christopher Jones memorial are also much admired.

Rotherhithe Illuminated ! is now fundraising for the incidental costs to support the continuation of the illuminations.

We hope you will be able to support us raise the £ 1500 needed to continue.
