During the summer I will be on my travels over to the Phillipines to do an elective nursing placement.
For 3 weeks I will be working in Batangas Medical Centre, a 500 bed government hospital which has a mission to "to provide quality, advanced and equitable healthcare and related services to all and to promote and strengthen teaching, training, research programs and activities".
This Hospital operates a 'No turn away policy' being one of the few hospitals which will provide its care to low income families.
I will be working on the Surgical Unit located within the hospital which has both male and female services and ranges from many different specialties; "cases include vehicular accidents and acute epidural hematomas for neurological cases; gunshot and stab wounds for trauma cases; all kinds of fractures for orthopaedic cases; appendicitis, colonic new growth, gastric obstruction for general surgery cases and amputation and diabetic foot for Isolation cases."
During my last week in the Philippines I will be staying with the Iraya Mangyan Tribe located in Puerto Galera. I am yet to receive more information on the clinical placement I am to undertake here but as of now I understand I will travel to the Health unit each morning and with my assigned supervisor travel to all nearby communities to attend those that require medical attention. I will add additional information when it is available.
The tribe are a private community and only contact "low land people" to sell their hand made crafts which is usually nito-weaving handicrafts.
This trip is a once in a life time opportunity that I am very fortunate to be able to experience,
this trip is all self funded including my travel, accommodation, insurance, medical supplies etc. (which have already been paid for). I would like to take a small fortune over with me to donate to both the hospital and tribe to purchase, supplies and equipment. Please to anyone who can donate I will be fotever grateful.
