    Story

Dementia is not something that just happens to everyone as they get older. It is caused by different illnesses. Our brains control everything we think, feel, say and do. They also store our memories for us. There are diseases that stop a person’s brain from working properly. When a person has one of these diseases, they may have problems remembering, thinking and speaking. They might say or do things that seem strange to others, and find it harder to do everyday things. They may not seem like the person they used to be. If you've had a friend or relative suffer with dementia you will know how gut wrenching it can be to witness their demise from the person you knew and loved to the person who may no longer even recognise you.

Most people with dementia have Alzheimer’s disease or vascular dementia but there are other types too.

At the moment there is no cure for dementia. Once a person has dementia, they will have it for the rest of their life. Unfortunately there are no medicines at the moment that can stop these diseases so people will continue to get worse over time.

944,000 people are estimated to be living with dementia in the UK. More than one million people will have dementia by 2030, and this will increase to more than 1.6 million by 2050.

Due to the event organiser cancelling this group challenge at short notice I will now be completing the challenge solo with my good wife doing the driving between mountains. This challenge will now see me complete Ben Nevis three times on Saturday June 10th, Scafell Pike three times on Sunday June 11th and Snowdon three times on Monday 12th June. So that's added just under 3000m of ascent onto the original challenge!!!!.

In total this new challenge will be

    9 mountains climbed!

    Over 66 miles of hiking!

    Over 9,423m of ascent!

    All in 3 days!

Your generous donations will help to fund this ongoing research to find a cure for dementia. Please give generously and feel free to forward this page to any of your friends and family

This challenge was the toughest thing I have ever done in my life....and probably will ever do. There were many times when I felt I couldnt carry on as I was exhausted and in pain but I was helped massively by family and friends who joined me on some of the hikes. I'll be forever grateful to them all for that. Jonny, Shea, Twisty, Joe, Carl, Cheryl, Ashy and Tim with his walking sticks.

Finally, I just want to say how boss my wife was during this challenge. She did all the driving and had to grab sleep here and there and not once did she complain. Aside from the driving she made sure I had eaten and drank enough, wore my cap and put suncream on, rested between walks and got the massage gun out on my aching legs whenever required and remained positive and happy throughout. Here's to the next challenge 🫣
